Off Balance

There was a time when I knew what I knew
was sure of it, confident, happy, smug.
Then, a puny, piddling, gnat-sized nudge
set me slightly off balance with its gentle tug
of what if.

I couldn’t even put it into sensible words
It was a discontent, a sigh soft and long,
something not quite right
worse, what if we have it all wrong
cued the nudge.

Since that day for some years now
I seem to live with spiritual vertigo
my feet no longer planted firm
in certainty – it’s been a blow to my ego
of know it all.

Somehow, I’ve learned to live this way
sure as anyone can be with the Divine
and hoping He will fill in the gaps
take the doubt, the faith and define
an acceptable belief.

  3. Spiritual vertigo is difficult! One wants to have faith, and then there is so much difficulty. You describe all this so well, Debi. (I'm sorry I did not visit earlier, I did not see the url.) Thanks. k.

  4. Spiritual vertigo--an interesting way to put it. I'm sure many have the feeling, though not necessarily the words. Nicely done.

  5. I am so struck by the words "spiritual vertigo" - I think a lot of us suffer from it these days. I like the hopefulness of the last stanza in striving towards "an acceptable belief." An intriguing read, kiddo!

  6. I agree with Sherry. I also think many of us feel off-balance these days, as if we're falling and we don't know where or why.
Things have changed so much in our lifetime, and I weep to think of the children. I want fresh air and clean water for those who are born today. I dare not expect peace, because this world has never known peace.
    Vertigo indeed.
